Let the Catalogs Begin

If you haven’t noticed, the “holiday sales” have begun at various stores like Kohls and such. Today, I got my first holiday catalog from Historic Aviation. I’m drooling just a little because I love old planes and do have a few die-cast models in my office, but I wonder how they got my name. Of the plance I have purchased, I have bought them in person….cause I like to touch them and feel them myself. I do subscribe to an aviation magazine…Air & Space, which is through the Smithsonian. If that is how they got my address, I think I’m a little miffed. Not that I don’t like looking at the catalog, just that I don’t like my name being sold.
Looking through the catalog, though, reminds me that I haven’t spent much time enjoying some of the things I truly love. I’ve been in DC most of the summer and fall….and I haven’t been to the Air and Space Museum since a friend of mine came into town back in July….and it used to be that I would visit every chance I get. I also haven’t been to Arlington National Cemetery for more than a few brief moments to leave flowers on one particular grave. What reminded me of both of these is the US WWII Navy Fighters pages with several models of a Corsair F4U….and DVD’s of Baa Baa Black Sheep. The TV show was based on Gregory “Pappy” Boyington, who is buried in section 7A of Arlington National Cemetery…a true “bad boy fly boy” who was OH so good….
In my explorations of planning a tiny bit of travel here and there, maybe I need to plan some time in DC when I’m not working. And instead of catalog shopping, I think I need to spend some more time in the Gift Shop at the Air and Space Museum.

Isn’t it funny how the catalogues we love to glance through at children, because they seem so mysterious/interesting/magical/COOL become instruments of annoyance once we grow up?
