Base Camp One

The gym used to be all about lifting weights.  I did cardio, which I’m not a fan of, and rewarded myself with weights.  Especially my favorite things:  leg press and skull crushers.  After being fussed at my a couple of massage therapists about inflexibility in my joints, and then after my “fit test” where I scored “poor” on flexibility, I have been doing workouts with the trainer that are different from any other workouts I have done in the last ten years.

I am shocked, however, that just stretching, doing light cardio and focused lifting that insists upon stability is effective.  Effective in that I am losing weight, I am gaining flexibility, my core is growing stronger and my stability (when doing isolated exercises) is growing.  It’s why I knew I needed some professional help to get me started – and keep me motivated.

The word of the day, today, seemed to be “isometric“.

But damn, it’s hard, to feel like I am starting back at the beginning. Base Camp One.

In Other News:

The Jan/Feb 2009 Mid-Issue Update of All Things Girl is now live. Some really fabulous stuff.   Part Two of our interview with Laura Bell Bundy, Man of the Moment Ben Bailey, some really fabulous short stories and poetry, as well as the introduction of a new columnist and other goodies.

While you are there, be sure and check out my  contribution to the Arts Section, which is, frankly, an image I cannot get out of my head:  the sheer volume of homeless in DC.  He lived outside the Navy Memorial Metro Stop, below $2,000 a month condos steps away from one of my favorite DC spots for dining….

On a more upbeat note, do check out my column, What’s In Your Heart.

Happy Super Bowl Sunday.  Hope your week is wonderful!

Forgive me as I play…

I purchased some themes for WordPress over at WooThemes on New Year’s Eve.  Yes, I’m sure you’ve noticed the changing look of my site, so that is the reason.  It was a buy 1 get 3 free sale, so I am happily playing around between two of the four themes.

This one – called “thick” is my favorite color scheme with all the pink and dark grey.  I just don’t know WP well enough to DIG IN and change the coding in the templates much.  I want full entries, not snippets, on the main page.

What I NEED to do is stop playing around  on the computer and go outside and play.  It’s sunny and 70 degrees here already – and is expected to be 80!  I think Mother Nature has her calender on the wrong page, but I am not going to complain.

I need to go take a quickie shower, and then go to the golf store.  I have narrowed my club choices down to three sets and am meeting my golf instructor to hit all three of them and getting them purchased.  I just can’t play with these clubs that were a gift anymore.  they need to be re-gripped and stuff.  Then….come hell or highwater today, my ass is going to the driving range today before dark.  I think that’s a great goal for a Sunny Saturay in January.  Don’t you?.

Election Night

I’m conspicuously quiet when it comes to discussing my political views.  Maybe it’s because I was brought up in the South and there are some things that are not supposed to be discussed with company in the living room – or even over coffee.   Don’t expect me to passiontately endorse the man I voted for.  Like the price I paid for my last car, it’s not something I’m going to talk about – polite company and all.

This blog is, in some ways, my virtual living room.

It’s no secret, at least to those who bother to really get to know me, that I am conservative in the bulk of my political views  – but also have some liberal leanings in some areas, like the rights of women.

A fair number of the folks I follow in blogs and in Twitter are very liberal and very vocal in their support of Obama.  I understand the passion, I do.  As someone that has worked much of the last three years in Washington DC…the last year basically living here….I have seen the daily workings of politics and how they play out on a daily basis.

What I am hoping to see, however, is that after tomorrow, once the next President is announced, is that all of these incredibly vocal folks continue to stay involved in politics.

Do you know your local Congressman?  Have you given him or her your support?  Have you written an email to him or her and told her how you feel about the way their vote was cast on the “bail-out” issue?  Are you aware of the stance the two Senators in your State take on issues that are important to you?

No matter who is elected as the next President, there will be some changes.  But the President is a small portion of that and without support of the House and the Senate, bigger changes are not possible.  Congress is who writes the laws, folks, and without good folks there – keeping in mind the issues that are important to the people who elected them….

So, for all of the arm-chair politicians out there, keep it up.  But don’t let one single race be the only thing that matters.  Don’t go back to not reading the newspaper.  Don’t neglect to vote in two years when there isn’t a Presidential election, but there IS an election for Senate in your state and there are potential changes for House as well….

Otherwise, all of the arm-chair talk with simply that:  talk.  Keep the passion you are feeling today alive each and every election.  Choose action and passion over lip service.

One Year Later

It was about a year ago that I started blogging again.  I joined the NaBloPoMo to kick myself into gear and I see that it is going on again this year.  But I don’t think I will officially join.

In looking back at my entries from this time last year, I realized I had done a pretty good job at getting back to the roots of blogging for me – which was a basic journaling activity that got me to write – although publicly – about what was going on in my life.  I was good that month – and did blog consistently for quite awhile.

I was re-reading a book (Note to Self:  On Keeping a Journal and Other Dangerous Pursuits) – a book I reviewed at ATG in August.  I forgot how much I missed simply writing about what is going on.  My life isn’t the stuff of movies, but overall, my life is active – and often very humorous.  Hey.  we all need humor.

I also think it’s important to actually LIVE life….so, about my day… (more…)

Fall Clothes

I have always been a lover of fall clothes. Maybe, because I always loved school, it was the signal that it was time to end the quiet (and boring) days of summer and go back to school. Maybe it was the mix of warm-toned colors, corduroy pants and cable knit sweaters.  Or maybe it was an unconscious signal to my soul wanderings… that the change of seasons – the predictable cycle of aging of nature….and the hope that comes during its rebirth…

I haven’t dusted off this blog properly in ages.  part of what was missing was a change of season here.  I changed out layout – back to my spring layout with a new image.  It’s a lovely view from Gillette Castle to the river….Cropped severely above – and in it’s full glory below.

I’m still thinking warm thoughts about my trip to Connecticut.  It was just lovely….

I remember Melissa saying something about the updated version of WP (2.5) and it being different….and it sure is. I’ll be honest, I don’t know if I like it. I guess I am a creature of habit and the previous interface was all kinds of comfortable like a favorite pair of shoes…or maybe that black granny sweater I have. I am missing the “save and continue editing” button and my categories being right there on the right of me. I think I need to check out the interface in Explorer to see if it’s a lot different – or a little different – than it is in Firefox.

Good heavens, this is so not what I had intended writing about when I logged in, but then again….

I’m glad I only upgraded here, though, and didn’t upgrade PN. And I need to mention it to Lor before we upgrade over at ATG ….

I honestly had more to say, but the new interface has thrown me…and the yard guy is here….and I also need some lunch.  I’ll be back.
